Health Literacy: Inform, educate, and empower people about health issues

Title:   Diabetes Education and Screening
Description:   Information about Diabetes
Objectives: To increase awareness of diabetes in the community; To provide support groups with information to manage their diabetes; To provide screening and testing, for adults who are at- risk for developing diabetes
Topics Addressed: Diabetes prevention and management, nutrition, and exercise.
Format:     Live presentation, screening and testing done onsite.
Audience:    Adults
Availability: Coastal AHEC

 

Title:   Diabetic Supplies Access Program
Description:   Coastal AHEC serves to give clients the required ID number and access number needed to order supplies. 
Objectives: To allow people to buy diabetic supplies at a discount.  
Topics Addressed:  Diabetic supplies; syringes, glucometers, and test strips.
Format:      Application form is mailed to Costal AHEC for processing.
Audience:    For people who have no insurance coverage for diabetic suppli
Availability: Coastal AHEC

 

Title:   Good Eats! Nutrition Awareness
Description:   This is an interactive presentation based on the FDA’s Food Pyramid
Objectives: To teach healthy nutritional concepts while having fun.

Format:     Live presentation, including food pyramid bingo game and synthetic food.
Audience:    All ages (school age children to seniors).
Availability: Coastal AHEC

 

Title:    Texas Youth Tobacco Awareness & Cessation Program /TYTAP
Description:   This program is for youth that have been ticketed for tobacco possession. 
Objectives: To meet state requirements for ticket dismissal
Topics Addressed:  Tobacco, health, state law, advertising and behavior  modification
Format:     Eight hour classroom instruction.
Audience:    Youth
Availability: Coastal AHEC. Must call BACODA at 281-212-2900 for information and registration fees.

Title:   Senior Initiative
Description:    Support is given to senior citizen programs in Galveston County. 
Objectives: To address health issues affecting the elderly.
Topics Addressed: Advocacy, health, nutrition, and exercise.
Format:     Live presentation
Audience:    Senior Adults
Availability: Coastal AHEC

 

Title:    Heartsaver CPR
Description:   Training for churches and community groups
Objectives: To teach basic first aid and CPR skills.
Topics Addressed: Lifesaving skills, safety and prevention.
Format:     Hands-on classroom instruction
Audience:    Church congregations and small community groups
Availability: Not available at this time.

Title:   Cancer Prevention and Control
Description:   Collaborative efforts with local entities.
Objectives: To bring awareness and educate the public about cancer and its causes; To empower community groups to advocate for healthier communities; To give information about available resources in the community.
Topics Addressed: .Advocacy, research, available resources, prevention, causes and treatments
Format:     Live presentations; forums, workshops, conferences and training.
Audience:    Adults
Availability: Coastal AHEC

 

Title:     “Wash up to Prevent Washing Out:”
Description:    With the use of soft, plush toys that are made to look like real germs, the presenter is able to help students understand how they are commonly spread and what can be done to prevent it. The program is a fun way to learn about contagion prevention and practicing good health habits. As we head into flu season and face the possible threat of a pandemic, we feel this is an important message for students to receive.
Objectives: Each classroom is a place to model, teach and practice safe contagion prevention habits.
Topics Addressed: The program encourages students: not to share items which could transmit disease, to dispose of their own hazardous waste (facial tissues), sneezing and cough etiquette, learn about 6 individual germs and the ailments they cause. In conjunction with the Glo-Germ products, this program also teaches proper hand washing techniques.
Format:     Live, classroom setting
Audience:    Elementary and middle school students
Availability: Pecan Valley AHEC. There is no fee.

 

Title:    “Eat for Good Health” program
Description:    Teaching children about health and wellness is a high priority for Pecan Valley AHEC. The “Eat for Good Health” program helps students understand the changes in the new food and exercise pyramid, how to make healthy food choices and the benefits of daily exercise. In addition, students learn about common “junk foods” and the harmful effects these can have on their body.
Objectives:  To teach students about the benefits of good nutrition and exercise.
Topics Addressed:  
Format:     Video, live classroom setting
Audience:    Elementary and middle school students
Availability: Pecan Valley AHEC. There is no fee.
